Pat's PBS Special

Hints for Health: A Nurse's Notebook® is Pat Carroll's 2004 special for PBS. This fast-paced, information-packed 90-minute program provides viewers with authoritative but easy-to-understand health hints that will help them treat injuries, manage symptoms, and navigate today's complicated health care system more easily. The show is based on Pat's latest book, What Nurses Know and Doctors Don't Have Time to Tell You from Perigee Books (Penguin Group, USA, Inc). She calls on her "more than 20" years of experience to provide this insider's guide to PBS viewers.

Pat's hints and tips are presented three ways:

  • Nurse's Notes are quick tips on a variety of topics viewers can use right away
  • Nurse's Wisdom segments are demonstrations that show viewers how to do things, such as care for a strain or sprain, apply heat or cold therapy, use thermometers correctly, administer ear and eye drops, protect that bad back and more...
  • What Nurses Know teaches viewers about health conditions such as headaches and heartburn; how to navigate the health care system, and get the most out of medical tests and prescription medicines; and other important issues, such as living wills and medication safety

Nothing in the show requires expensive equipment or takes lots of time to do. In fact, most of Pat's tips can be carried out with items already in the average home. Do you have celery, a plastic bag and rubbing alcohol, some honey and crackers, hydrogen peroxide or vinegar? If so, you'll learn how you can treat heartburn, apply a cold pack, treat a hangover and make ear drops -- just for starters!

Connecticut Public Television says:
With a warm and engaging style, nurse Pat Carroll helps identify the maladies that so often confound folks, whether it's cleaning a cut or scrape, or navigating the cold medicine aisle. Pat's a gem right here in our backyard.

The Hartford Courant says:
Connecticut nurse Pat Carroll dispenses all manner of helpful medical information as if she were a kind of Heloise on health.

The Record Journal says:
In her fast-paced and lively program... Carroll mixes practical how-to advice with special tips. The program is set up very much like a cooking demonstration, except that instead of recipes, [she] is dealing with bandages.

Viewers are also treated to a quiz of myths and facts. Can you tell which of these are myths...or facts?

  • You should feed a cold and starve a fever
  • Poison ivy rash is spread by the fluid that leaks from the rash
  • Canker sores are very contagious
  • The best way to treat a fever is with an alcohol bath

You will have the answers to these and much more when you watch Hints for Health: A Nurse's Notebook®
