About us

Patricia Carroll is both a registered nurse and registered respiratory therapist with "more than 20" years’ professional experience. She is a graduate of the Respiratory Therapy Program at the SUNY-Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY and the School of Nursing at Excelsior College (called Regents College when she attended) in Albany, NY. She published her first article in the professional literature in 1979, and since then has published more than 150 articles. She won two prestigious awards from her nursing and medical writer peers for her book, The Surgical Nurses’ Managed Care Manual and has won numerous additional awards for her journal articles.

Committed to Consumer Education

What Nurses Know and Doctors Don't Have Time to Tell You is Pat's latest book from the Perigee imprint of Penguin Group (USA), Inc. You can buy a copy by clicking on the book cover at left, or by visiting your favorite bookseller. Special downloads Pat has designed for her radio and television appearances to talk about the book are available at the book's Web site, WhatNursesKnow.com. The book has been selected by four book clubs, and the NY Daily News will be featuring 12 excerpts over four months: from June through September, 2004.

Pat is the lead author for LifeMasters Online, a site with information for people living with chronic illnesses. She has also begun writing a consumer e-newsletter. Click here to sign up for your free subscription!

Educating Professionals

Pat has joined the Internet revolution and in addition to maintaining her own Web sites, she writes for First Consult (formerly PDxMD), an evidence-based practice site for physicians and she contributes to other sites as time allows.

She regularly speaks at national conventions for nurses and other health professionals and believes strongly in professional continuing education. Pat loves learning new things and enjoys sharing her work with her professional colleagues. She is board certified in general nursing, emergency nursing and nursing professional development (formerly continuing education & staff development.)

Clinical Practice

Pat most recently worked as an ER nurse for 12 years. In 2002, she became the volunteer health coordinator for the homeless shelter in her community. Currently, she is working with a development corporation in Connecticut to bring a federally funded community health center to the largest city in the state without one. Her book Community Health Nursing: A Practical Guide won an award of excellence from the American Medical Writers Association (New England).

Coming Soon to a Radio or TV Near You!

For the past three years, Pat Carroll has been making media appearances to teach consumers how to make wise choices about their health. She is excited about this new opportunity to reach out and share her knowledge with a wider audience and to help people manage their health most effectively. She has been an in-studio guest for local news programs in cities across the U.S. and has been a guest on CNN and Fox News Channel.

Pat's first special for PBS, Hints for Health: A Nurse's Notebook® makes its national debut in August 2004. Check with your local PBS station for date and time.
